Happy Animals Make Happier Meals

While there are lots of great (and tasty) reasons to choose our foods carefully, a recent story by ABC News illuminates another, very important piece to consider when choosing meat and dairy products. They recently discussed, and aired footage of, extraordinary cruelty to thousands of cows in a factory dairy farm right here in New York state. I’m not really one to get on a soapbox about these huge issues, but I think it’s worth mentioning at least that this is another very good reason to eat locally — and know your farmer. It’s easier to hold someone accountable when you see them each week at the market or visit their farm. It’s good to know that these issues are making it to the mainstream news, but it’s also quite sad to see that we have so far to go.

If you’re interested in learning more about some of these issues, I’d recommend the work of Frances Moore Lappé and Wendell Berry as good starting points.

Everybody Loves This Pizza

Ever thought you’d have a bite of a seasonally inspired pizza?  Me neither. After spending time in the Heritage Radio studio for our interview with Nicole on her show, Hot Grease, she treated us to pizza at Roberta’s.  The radio’s studios are two converted shipping containers that have been sustainably outfitted and sit in the back section of Roberta’s garden. (Did I mention that Alice Waters help fund a rooftop garden over the studio too?)

Now I have to be honest – I love pizza as much as the next person, but when I think of lunch, it isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.  But I sure am happy I hung around the studio to enjoy and chat after the show. Nicole recommended her favorite pie on the menu, “Good Girl”, which is a thin-crusted brick oven pizza covered in my favorite vegetable, kale, along with slivers of fresh garlic, heritage pork sausage and taleggio.  You could say I was pretty happy.

We had a blast this afternoon chatting with Nicole on her show Hot Grease. Thanks again to the team at Heritage Radio Network! You can listen to our talk here if you like — and even subscribe to Nicole’s show as a podcast. She’s absolutely wonderful, and I’d highly recommend checking out her other interviews (after you’ve listened to ours, of course).

Please tune in tomorrow (Monday, November 8th) to The Heritage Radio Network as Carlin and I chat with Nicole Taylor on her show Hot Grease. You can listen online at heritageradionetwork.com starting at 3:30 pm. If you miss the show you can listen via RSS or iTunes here. I’m not sure if they’ll be taking calls during our visit, but if so, we’d love to hear from you!

We got some more great press recently. The wheels were featured in Print’s 2009 Regional Design Annual. It’s a fantastic honor to have all our hard work recognized as some of the best design from the New York area. Thanks, Print!

This month our hard work got a big wink from the food and lifestyle world. We’re thrilled to have our Herb Wheel featured in the September issue of Martha Stewart Living! So if you have a copy lying around, check us out on page 32. Otherwise, you can head on over to the shop and see what all the fuss is about.

First I must confess something; I fibbed a little in my earlier post about my trip to Green Bay being to visit a client. In fact, I was the client…Chew on This was the client. Over the last month or so, we have been feverishly working to re-launch ourselves. Obviously the website is one manifestation of all this hard work, but we have also totally revamped our product line. The wheels are now new-and-improved – on a heavier stock and in a WONDERFUL new package. I have been in Green Bay for the last few days working with the most incredible group of people to make this all come together. The team here has been totally amazing — not only in their printing expertise, but also in their generosity. They have worked doggedly with us to create a greatly improved product — which I am proud to formally introduce now, and given me a lovely, insightful few days in an area of the country I knew nothing about. I really hope you check out the wheels and our new products in the shop (the recipe cards are super cute!). All my gratitude to Paul and everyone at Van Lanen!!! I heart Green Bay!
